Aquatic ecosystems are bodies of water that support communities of marine or freshwater organisms dependent upon each other and their environment. Human development, encroachment and pollution have damaged more than 70% of our nation's rivers and streams, some of them severely. Nearly 40% of our nation's rivers and streams do not meet standards for swimming safety or fishing sustainability. Non-point source pollution such as soil erosion from logging, oil runoff from city streets, acid mine drainage and nutrients from farm fertilizers are blamed for some of the destruction to our streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries, islands, wetlands, beaches and vernal pools. Healthy aquatic ecosystems benefit us by filtering pollutants from our water supply and providing spawning, feeding and nursery habitats for our fisheries. They also provide countless recreational opportunities for millions of Americans. Advocates say that in order for these degraded ecosystems to regain their functionality, they must be returned to their original condition - or as close to it as possible.
Proposed Legislation: Reintroduction of S.1539 - National Clean and Safe Water Fund Act of 2003 (108th Congress 2003-2004)

- I oppose reforming current aquatic ecosystems policy and wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Leader Charles Schumer (NY).
- I support establishing a National Clean and Safe Water Fund for the EPA to carry out water quality projects including:
1.) Wetland protection and restoration projects.
2.) Contaminated sediment projects.
3.) Drinking water source protection projects.
4.) Land acquisition projects for water quality protection.
And wish to donate resources to the campaign committee of Sen. Jack Reed (RI) and/or to an advocate group currently working with this issue.

If elected as a trustee, the campaign committee of Sen. Jack Reed (RI) will be unconditionally awarded the funds pledged to this issue along with a letter requesting him to favorably consider either reintroducing S.1539 - National Clean and Safe Water Fund Act of 2003 (108th Congress 2003-2004), or a similar version thereof.
- American Rivers
If elected as a trustee, American Rivers will be awarded the funds pledged to this issue along with a letter requesting these funds be used to advocate for safeguarding small streams and wetlands.
The mission of American Rivers is to protect wild rivers, restore damaged rivers and conserve clean water for people and nature. We combine national advocacy with field work in key river basins to deliver the greatest impact. We are practical problem-solvers with positions informed by science. We build partnerships and work closely with local river advocates, business and agriculture interests, recreation groups and others to forge win-win solutions. American Rivers’ goals are to restore damaged rivers to improve flows, reconnect fish and wildlife habitat, remove 400 hazardous and outdated dams, and restore 10,000 miles of rivers and 1,000 acres of floodplains.
